Smash Summit 10 Final Placings

Zain Continues Year of Melee Dominance at Summit 10

Amidst an incredibly dramatic week for the Super Smash Bros. Melee scene, Zain “Zain” Naghmi reigned supreme over fellow Melee competitors with a dominant performance at Smash Summit 10.

A Dominant Performance to Cap Off A Dominant Year

Zain began the tournament with a decisive sweep of his pool. He then followed up with a clean 3-1 victory over Cody “IBDW” Schwab in the top 8 and secured his place in Grand Finals with a quick 3-1 win over Melee legend Joseph “Mang0” Marquez. Mang0 and Zain would meet once again in the Grand Finals, though. Despite Mang0 pushing Zain to 5 games, Zain once again stood victorious in an exciting grand finale.

Zain’s 1st place at Smash Summit 10 follows an immensely long string of Zain’s high placements during 2020. At Genesis 7, the first major of the year, Zain beat the no.1 ranked Juan “HungryBox” Debiedma to claim glory. He soon followed with a respectable 4th place at Smash Summit 9 – one of the last major offline tournaments before the pandemic.

Despite the pandemic-forced shift to online play, Zain did not relent. Zain continued with victories in the LACS, Rona Rumble, and the Slippi Champions League. This outstanding performance at this weekend’s Summit X has cemented Zain as one of the world’s best Melee players.

An unclear future for Melee

While Zain’s performances have been awe-inspiring, the Melee scene itself is once again in potential jeopardy. Last week, organizers of the ‘Big House’ event – a long-standing major tournament in the Smash scene – had announced that they had received a cease from Nintendo to halt their online Melee tournament scheduled for December. The decision sparked outrage, with ‘# free melee’ trending on Twitter shortly after The Big House organizers’ announcement.

While those familiar with competitive Melee (and Smash in general) are used to Nintendo stifling the competitive grassroots community’s work, shutting down online tournaments during a global pandemic is undoubtedly a low blow. The Melee scene has encountered numerous challenges, yet this cataclysmic hurdle presented by Nintendo could be its largest obstacle to date.
